Our family has been producing sorghum for at least 4 generations (this as far back as we are aware of). It has been something that has brought our family together and the local community. Woodsy Elliott was one of the first sorghum producers to help begin the sorghum festival in Springfield, KY. During this time frame it was common for communities of people to grow sorghum and come together as a group to mill the sorghum and cook the juice into syrup to share with all who contributed.Â
This is a picture of Woodsy Elliott taken while he was cooking sorghum on the courthouse steps during the Springfield, KY sorghum festival.
This is a picture of Jimmy Elliott (Poorhouse Sorghum owner) and his two granddaughters Lexi and Kaitlyn taken in 2011 when Jimmy got back into making sorghum after taking a long break after his father's passing.
Since the Elliott family got back into sorghum production in 2011 they have had many great successes. The greatest of those being featured on Farmher an RFD-TV production that features female farmers and their operations. Kaitlyn Elliott (Poorhouse Sorghum co-owner) was showcased on one of their episodes in 2017. After this aired we began selling products online through Etsy to allow people from across the country to experience the delightful taste of Poorhouse Sorghum.
