The Hermitage

A Christmas visit to the Hermitage by the late Prof. Mick Aston of Time Team fame.

Beneath the former Dispensary building on Southgate in Pontefract lies a rock-cut medieval Hermitage with an Oratory, Chapel and Well accessed by a spiral staircase.

PontArc members surveyed and cleaned up the Hermitage in 1971 and for many years conducted regular tours for the public. The site is now owned by Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and unfortunately can no longer be visited. It is hoped this situation will change as plans for the site are developed and the Hermitage can again be recognised as a national treasure.

In 2010, PontArc published a small pamphlet on the Hermitage which is still available to order - see our Publications page.
