2018 Geophysics

Investigation of the double-ditched rectilinear cropmark in Darrington continued in 2018 with geophysical surveys carried out with assistance from South Leeds Archaeology and Sheffield University.

An earth resistance survey over the main cropmark area was carried out first - with 16 x 20m squares traversed over several days. The area was then extended to 25 x 20m squares for a magnetic gradiometer survey which took less than 3 hours.

In the autumn, a couple of test pits were dug away from the cropmark to explore high and low earth resistance areas and to check the depth of topsoil for future reference.

See the images below for the geophysics results and views of the test pits.
