Note on budget deficit vs. federal debt
1. Budget deficit
  1. Federal revenue $$ (per year) = government spending $$ (per year) → balanced budget
  2. Revenues > spending → budget surplus
  3. Revenues < spending → budget deficit
2. Federal Debt: the cumulative amount of money that the U.S. Treasury has borrowed to make up for all those deficits in previous years
  1. Much bigger (potential) problem than budget deficits
    1. Current federal debt = $20 trillion
    2. Current interest on debt = $302.3 billion (5.61% of Total U.S. spending/year)
