Common FAFSA Questions

What is FAFSA?

The FAFSA is an online form that uses student and parent tax information to determine their financial need. The financial need is sent to colleges, who then decide how much need-based financial aid (in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans) they will give a student to help them pay for college.

Can I complete FAFSA if my parents do not have Social Security numbers?

Yes! As long as the student has a social security number you can complete FAFSA. The main differences will be:

  • You will not be able to make a parent FSA ID. This will mean you won't be able to use the IRS data retrieval tool for your parents tax information and they won't be able to electronically sign.

  • When FAFSA asks for parent socials enter 9 zeros: 000-00-0000

  • At the end when you submit, you will be able to electronically sing but for your parents to sign you will have to print off a signature page have your parent sign that and mail it in to mailing address listed at the bottom of the page.

When should I fill out the FAFSA?

You should complete your FAFSA ASAP so that you can receive the maximum state and federal grants!

The FAFSA Deadlines depends on your colleges:

  • NC Community Colleges (Isothermal CC) Deadline- March 1st

Who do I list as my parent on FAFSA?

Big Note: You cannot list the following people as your parent unless they have legally adopted you.

  • Widowed Stepparent

  • Grandparents

  • Foster Parents

  • Legal Guardians

  • Older Brothers or Sisters

  • Aunts or Uncles

If you are living with a legal guardian or one of the above people and they have not legally adopted you contact Ms. Owenby for what to do.

What to Do If Your or Your Family’s Financial Situation Has Changed

Many FAFSA applicants have experienced recent financial changes due to the COVID-19 emergency or other reasons.

Has your (or your family’s) financial situation changed from what is reflected on your federal income tax return? For example, you or a family member has lost a job or claimed unemployment benefits. If so, you may be eligible to have your FAFSA form adjusted to qualify for additional aid. Follow these steps:

  1. Complete the FAFSA questions as instructed (including using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, if eligible).

  2. Submit your FAFSA form.

  3. Contact the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend to discuss how your financial situation has changed.

Financial aid offices can adjust your financial aid award to reflect your or your family’s current income.
