Easier access. In the Oregon legislature, led the effort to pass Oregon’s automatic voter registration law to expand ballot access. Values the role of government in protecting voting rights. More restrictive. Approves requiring a photo ID to vote, updated and accurate voter registration records, and vote tallying by controlled and certified machines and software that are made in America.
Easier access. Votes to safeguard abortion access and reproductive healthcare for all Americans. Opposes attempts to criminalize and limit a woman’s right to bodily autonomy. Advocates for equal access to comprehensive sex education, fertility options, abortion, and birth control. Seeks to protect doctors and medical professionals who provide reproductive healthcare. “I will always fight to keep health care decisions between a patient and their medical provider.”
More restrictive. In a November 2023 television interview said she was “very pleased” with the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision that overturned the federal right to abortion. Believes abortion laws should be left up to individual states. Worked as a paid lobbyist for Common Sense for Oregon, a nonprofit organization that sought to take away reproductive rights in Oregon. Declares support of federal protection for both IVF treatments and contraception.
Supports expansion. Approves passing universal health care legislation to ensure that every American has access to affordable, quality care. Approves allowing Medicaid and Medicare to bargain with Big Pharma on prescription costs, and ensuring those savings are available to all Americans. Seeks to lower deductibles so that health insurance is an actual benefit, instead of a shell game. Works to maintain the integrity of Medicare and Social Security to safeguard safety net support for older Americans.
Hard to assess position. Said she would reduce "stifling government regulations on doctors, nurses, and private healthcare providers" to help those providers "respond to the ever-growing demand for healthcare services and medications." Supports "Right to Try" policies "so that advanced, life-saving treatments will be available to those facing serious health crises."
Policies vary. Advocates for major investments in new public housing in the communities hardest hit by the affordable housing shortage, including workforce housing. Introduced the Decent, Affordable, Safe Housing for All (DASH) Act to reduce homelessness and address the housing affordability crisis in Oregon and across the country. Wants to shift tax policies that subsidize the wealthy toward creating more opportunities for first-time home ownership.
Policies vary. Seeks ending prohibitive and inflationary policies that stifle new construction with excessive permitting costs, building regulations, city and county codes, bureaucratic red tape, and outdated land use restrictions. Wants to be part of the conservative majority in Congress that ensures the federal government does its part to lift housing restrictions.
Favors. In Oregon legislature led efforts to pass Oregon’s universal background checks law. Played a role in prohibiting individuals with a record of domestic violence restraining orders from possessing a firearm. Withstood recall attempt associated with backlash from the gun lobby. Is a gun owner, and supports measures to expand background checks to all gun sales, close loopholes in our laws that allow guns to fall into the wrong hands and strengthen safe storage requirements.
Blocks with minor exceptions. Supports the right to self-protection and the right to keep and bear arms under the 2nd Amendment, but would allow "reasonable measures" to separate the mentally ill from weapons. Stated that much of gun violence "is perpetrated by criminals, and the mentally ill, by using illegally obtained and possessed firearms." Believes misuse of firearms can be curbed by enforcing existing laws to separate the mentally ill from weapons. Stated "If you are genuinely concerned about suicide…then study WHY people are killing themselves vs. eliminating a tool of choice."
Policies likely to improve equity. Approves canceling crippling student loan debt and reforming the predatory student loan industry. Advocates for federal investment in public education at all levels, including funding to support free community college for all. Seeks to guarantee that the federal government keeps its commitment to fund Title 1 so that all students have equal access to quality public education.
Policies likely to erode equity. Supports school choice, parental rights, and the superiority of the parent in all aspects of child-rearing. Wants to pass a Parents’ Bill of Rights whereby parents could readily block or restrict curriculums designed to promote inclusion and support for marginalized students. Declares that governments at all levels must end social experimentation on our kids.
