Lesson 2

Despite the supposed riches that were promised the men on these Crusades, what really motivated people to completely abandon their lives back home and embark on a quest into the unknown. The Pope's speech that galvanized the first war is largely regarded to be one of the most religiously zealous speeches in history. There were other motivations that inspired others to follow the course.

Students in this lesson will learn about what inspires people to act in such drastic manners. They will also be exposed to primary sources that will help them parse through bias present in these accounts. This is a very important skill for historians, and everyday people, to possess.
