Stock Portfolios

This section contains class-specific "stock portfolios". One of the assignments students seem to like is one that asks each to choose a few stocks. Then we create a "class portfolio" from their stock picks and track the performance of their "portfolio" throughout the term to see how well they do.

This assignment gives students practice with the following statistical concepts:

  • index numbers (in the form of reading Dow Jones, NASDAQ, and S&P500 indices).

  • reading and analyzing multiple line charts

  • changes in data over time

  • variance

Finally, students seem to like what they perceive as a "real-world" application of what they learn. And I would add that for many it's their first exposure to the stock market- the knowledge of which seems to be very SES-based.
