Some battles are visible. Others are fought where nobody can see.
Maybe there's something in your life you want to be free from.
Something you keep returning to.
Something controlling your thoughts, choices or behaviour.
Maybe it's fear, addiction, anger, guilt, a destructive habit, temptation, emotional pain, or something you don't even know how to explain.
People around you may know nothing about it.
But you know the battle is there.
And perhaps you're tired of fighting it alone.
There is a man Jesus encountered in Mark 5:1–20 whose life had become completely overwhelmed.
He lived isolated from other people. His behaviour had become destructive, and those around him had tried to restrain him, but nobody had been able to truly help him.
His situation involved spiritual oppression, and it had affected almost every part of his life.
Then he encountered Jesus.
Jesus did what nobody else had been able to do.
He set him free.
Afterwards, the people who came to see what had happened found the man:
“sitting there, dressed and in his right mind.” — Mark 5:15 (NIV)
. Think about that transformation.
The man who had been tormented was now at peace.
The man who had been isolated could return to people.
The man others couldn't help had encountered Someone with authority greater than what had controlled him.
His battle was not greater than Jesus.
Your situation may be nothing like this man's.
But perhaps you understand what it feels like when something begins to have more control over your life than you want it to have.
Maybe you've told yourself:
“This is the last time.”
But you returned to it.
Maybe you've tried to stop.
Maybe you've hidden it because you're afraid of what people would think.
Maybe what you're battling isn't a habit at all.
It could be fear that won't leave you alone.
Thoughts that continually trouble you.
Anger you struggle to control.
Guilt from something in your past.
A relationship or experience that still has a hold on you.
Or perhaps you can't even put a name to what you're experiencing.
Whatever it is, you don't have to pretend that everything is fine.
Perhaps you don't consider yourself religious.
Maybe you've never prayed about what you're going through.
Maybe you're not even sure what you believe about God.
But if you've tried fighting this battle with your own strength and you're still looking for freedom, would you consider bringing it to Jesus?
The man in Mark 5 encountered someone with authority greater than what had held him captive.
That same Jesus said:
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36 (NIV)
. Christianity isn't simply about learning to behave better.
Jesus came to transform lives.
You don't need impressive words.
You don't need to pretend that you have faith you don't have.
You can begin with honesty.
You could simply say:
“Jesus, this is what I am battling. I don't want it controlling my life anymore. I need Your help. If You can set me free, please help me.”
Tell Him what you're dealing with.
Even if you've never told anyone else.
Bring the battle into the presence of Jesus.
Sometimes God brings dramatic change in a moment.
At other times, freedom involves a journey of prayer, changing patterns, receiving support, accountability, counselling or appropriate professional help, and learning a new way of living.
Asking for help is not failure.
And depending on what you're battling, you may not need to fight it by yourself.
The first step may simply be allowing someone trustworthy to stand with you.
You don't have to tell us everything before we can pray for you.
Share only what you feel comfortable sharing.

Jesus doesn't just want to help you overcome one battle and then disappear from your life.
He invites you to know Him.
Through Jesus, we can receive forgiveness, reconciliation with God and a new life.
Perhaps your battle is what brought you here.
It could also become the moment that causes you to discover Jesus for yourself.
