What is a Podcast?

A podcast is a digital audio file published online that can be downloaded to a computer or cell phone. Usually podcasts include multiple episodes, that are often focused on a particular topic or theme and are made available automatically to subscribers.

Through podcasting, anyone can be their own radio host and share their own audio content. There are podcasts from: individuals, companies, media networks, celebrities, comedians, storytellers, etc. There are video podcasts too, although this is less common.

Podcast Formats

There are different types of podcasts, and it is ultimately your decision on the type of podcast you would like to create. However, there are four prominent types: solo podcasts, co-hosted podcasts, fiction and non-fiction storytelling podcasts.

Solo podcasts have one main host delivering the content. They are easy to produce and edit since there's only one person to consider.

Co-hosted podcasts have a set host and other guest hosts. It usually starts with a narration from the main host and then moves into a panel discussion, interview, or contribution from another source, like podcast listeners.

Non-fiction storytelling podcasts recite and comment the true stories of others over several episodes. These podcasts are usually produced by subject experts, like journalists or true crime enthusiasts.

Fiction storytelling podcasts are dramatic audio performances that tell stories using scripts, actors and music, very similar to audiobooks.
