The new building addition is a master bedroom for the aged clients who are not convenient to use the stairs to reach the existing bedroom on the second floor of their townhouse. POPLAR AVE HOUSE, TORONTO_MERGING BY OUTSTANDING
To respect the neighborhood and the environment, this second story addition project not only has a shifted south wall on the second story to follow the setback requirement but also keeps as `much original building components as possible. The two colors of the exterior cladding are the extensions of the existing brick colors which generate the energetic dialogue on the building facades. The black color exterior cladding plays a role to integrate the elements between new and old by creating a “black folded S shape profile” on the facade staring from the roof to the second story wall, to the second story floor, to the first story wall and terminating at the first story floor. This continuous folded piece interlocks new and existing, up and down and interior and exterior of the building. The diagonal shaped balcony with the extended exterior wall at the front door enhances the image of the entrance. The horizontal oblique line of the balcony also responds to the vertical single-direction slope of the roof and generates a dynamic balance of the architectural form. The skylights introduce the natural light with the passive solar energy to the second story corridor which is not allowed any window located due to the fire safety issue. By locating the large size of the openings on the east and west wall, the house has abundant natural light and air ventilation that reduce the energy usage. The opening on the extended wall at the front entrance creates a picture-like scene to interact with the neighborhood. The house expresses its modern perception based on accommodating its own history. The house transformed into a fresh but humble factor within the neighborhood and merged into the neighborhood by its outstanding.
