Think of yourself as a Vocal Athlete!
Always use proper singing technique.
Always warm-up and cool down.
Cool down should be the reverse of warm-ups followed by 10 minutes of silence.
Tips for Better Singing
Keep everything RELAXED! (tongue, chin, neck, cheeks, shoulders)
The tongue should be flat and relaxed, touching the back of the bottom teeth.
Only move your tongue up on a t, d, l, n, or rolled r’s.
Keep your rib cage open. Lungs expand down and out!
Use your abs for support.
Good Posture. Think balancing book on head or back to the wall.
When speaking the text, use your head voice (Cinderella or Gingy).
Modify vowels in your upper range. Modify when vowels begin to feel difficult as you get higher in pitch. This is rounding out the space in your mouth to an aw, eh, or ih vowel. ee=eh, ay=aw, oh=aw,
Sopranos/Tenors modify on top space E and above. (open up the vowel)
Altos modify on middle line B and above.
Hydration
Once water is consumed, it takes several hours to reach the cellular level in the body and vocal folds.
Water should be at room temperature when drinking. Cold water reduces swelling in the vocal folds!
How can I get extra hydration before a performance?
Eat 1 apple an hour before
suck on gummy bears
steam inhalation
What can dry out my vocal folds?
Caffeine & Alcohol (add an extra glass of water for every alcoholic or caffeinated beverage to compensate.)
Smoking/ 2nd hand smoke
Antihistamines, beta blockers, inhaled steroids (Allegra D, Zyrtec, & Musinex DM are OK)
Stage Smoke
How might I abuse my voice?
Coughing/Throat clearing (instead, sip water)
Yelling
Singing out of range/character voices
Excessive use during illness
Overuse (ideal talking duration is 90% talking & 10% silence… don’t talk unless you are getting paid for it ☺)
