PNAJE announces its 2019 winners in college journalism contest
380 entries received in 22 categories for reporting, visuals and web content
TACOMA, WA, May 20 — Results are in for the best in college journalism as the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators announced its 2019 contest winners.
The contest continued its format to an all-digital entry platform, garnering 380 entries. While entries this year came from Oregon and Washington schools, Idaho, Alaska and Montana schools are also eligible to enter.
"College journalists are covering stories that many of our local professional news outlets don't have time or resources to cover," said Melissa Jones, journalism adviser at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore., and president of the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators. "In some cases, college students at two- and four-year schools are the only reporters covering skyrocketing tuition increases and white-collar crimes on campus. These awards show some of the great work happening at colleges and universities around the Pacific Northwest. Our communities should be proud of this work."
19 judges offered constructive feedback on each entry. The judging staff included communications professionals who currently or previously worked for publications across the United States such as The Washington Post, Newsday, The Detroit News, McClatchy Newspapers, The Olympian, The News Virginian and The (Tacoma) News Tribune. Other judges included communication professors from Western Washington and Everett Community College, Foster Web Marketing, Averill & Associates LLC and PRI/PRX.
The student staff of The Advocate at Mount Hood Community College in Oregon took top honors for print general excellence and third in the publication sweeps categories.
In the publications sweeps category, which counted the most first-, second- and third-place finishes for a school, student journalists at The Indy at Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., earned first and Everett (Wash.) Community College’s The Clipper placed second.
Everett student journalist Simon Krane also took first in the individual sweeps honors. The Clackamas Print of Clackamas Community College in Oregon took top honors for best website.
Shoreline Community College's The Ebbtide received second place in the print general excellence category, with third going to Pierce College Fort Steilacoom's The Pioneer.
Student journalist Eric Carlson of The Clackamas Print earned second in the individual sweeps category, with Tyler Reyes of The Indy, Fletcher Wold of The Advocate and Joshua Goodman-Peavy of Bellevue College's The Watchdog tying for third.
Other college news staffs that competed are from Saint Martin's University and Highline, Green River and Peninsula colleges in Washington.
Entries consisted of work that students completed from spring quarter 2018 through winter quarter 2019.
