Institutional Profile

PM SHRI Vaidya Surat Singh Memorial Government Model Senior Secondary School, Rajgarh is a co-educational government institution located at the foothills of the Churdhar range near Rajgarh town. Historically, the area was known as Sidhu ki Tikri and later acquired the name Rajgarh following the establishment of an administrative fort (Garh) by a ruling monarch.

The institution was established in 1948, immediately after India’s independence, as a Primary School recognized by the District Board, owing to the visionary efforts of local intellectuals. Initially, the school operated from a single-room facility constructed in the market area through the financial and voluntary contributions of Shri Heera Singh Jaildar and Lala Mansa Ram. In 1952, the institution was relocated to the original fort premises.

With the active support and educational foresight of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the founder of Himachal Pradesh and its first Chief Minister, the school was upgraded to the Middle School level in 1952. To ensure access to education for students from remote areas, a residential hostel facility was established near Rajgarh town. Subsequently, the institution attained High School status during the academic session 1954–55.

On 25 April 1960, the school infrastructure suffered extensive damage due to a fire incident that completely destroyed the fort building, which was predominantly constructed of deodar wood. Following this incident, the school was temporarily shifted to the Gram Panchayat building with the assistance of local Panchayat authorities.

The institution was upgraded to the Senior Secondary level in 1989 and was designated as a Government Model Senior Secondary School in 2017. Recognizing its sustained academic performance and infrastructural development, the Government of Himachal Pradesh declared the school an Institute of Excellence in 2023. In the same year, the institution was included under the PM SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) initiative of the Government of India. In 2025, the school obtained affiliation with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.

At present, the institution provides comprehensive educational infrastructure aligned with contemporary pedagogical standards. Facilities include ICT-enabled classrooms, advanced computer laboratories, vocational education laboratories, and a qualified and experienced teaching faculty across all academic streams. The school offers educational services from the pre-primary level up to the senior secondary level, ensuring holistic academic and co-curricular development of learners.
