Daily Schedule
Playful Pals Preschool understands that children thrive and benefit from having schedules and routines in how they help with their development and transitions in how they can predict what is happening next. Each activity conducted throughout the day provides children with the opportunities to engage in many different activities and subjects of interest. With children in the preschool age, we understand that lunch and nap (rest) times are essential times for many children. Lunchtime and nap time are conducted at the same time each day; if there are children who do not nap, providing a quiet activity like reading or drawing can be used as a quiet or rest time activity.
Developmentally Appropriate Practice
Playful Pals ensures the use of developmentally appropriate practice in our program in how the environment, materials and manipulatives, play equipment, furniture, and curriculum are established. Educators choose appropriate instructional materials and methods like books, multimedia resources, activities, manipulatives and teaching strategies that will help students achieve the learning objectives. Classrooms are organized, with materials labeled, age-appropriate games, access to materials that are of interest and opportunities for learning and practice. We focus on the whole child to meet each child's needs. Using the whole child approach to education engages educators in understanding the links between the five whole child principles of being healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged in each classroom (Slade et al. 2013).
Curriculum
Playful Pals Preschool uses a Waldorf education approach in our curriculum. Waldorf education is an embedded in a 3-part learning process, engaging head, heart and hands (thinking, feeling and doing) (Sunbridge Institute, n.d).
Our approach incorporates an emergent curriculum based on student interests. Playful Pals understands the need for a focus on core subjects and skills, in addition we proudly integrate art, music and play for an inclusive curriculum. Our program will address the cognitive, language, social, emotional, and physical development of preschool-age children that is developmentally appropriate. Within these developmental domains children will learn Math, reading, writing, phonics, science and social studies. Using thematic units is a great way to incorporate many different content areas and developmental domains while also being engaging and educational. Our program follows Tennessee State Standards and is prepared for Kindergarten readiness.
