At Playful Connections, behaviour is viewed as communication rather than something to be managed or controlled. Challenging behaviours are often a child’s way of expressing an unmet need, a difficult emotion, or a skill that is still developing.
Behaviour consultancy focuses on understanding what may be driving the behaviour and identifying practical ways to support positive change. Rather than asking, “How do we stop this behaviour?” we explore, “What is this behaviour communicating?”
By understanding the needs beneath the behaviour, we can support children to develop the skills, confidence, and emotional resources they need to thrive, while also strengthening the relationships that matter most.
Behaviour consultancy may be helpful if your child is experiencing:
Frequent tantrums or emotional outbursts
Defiant or oppositional behaviour
Difficulty following instructions
Aggression
Anxiety and worries
Sleep difficulties
School-related concerns
Sibling conflict
Emotional regulation challenges
The consultation process is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to your child’s individual needs, as every family is unique.
Behaviour consultations are supportive and educational in nature and do not replace psychological, psychiatric, medical, or diagnostic assessments where these may be required.
Parents get in touch to discuss their concerns and schedule an initial consultation.
During this in-depth parent consultation, information is gathered to gain a holistic understanding of the child and the challenges being experienced.
Together we explore:
Current concerns and behaviours
Family circumstances and routines
Developmental history
Child strengths and interests
School experiences and feedback (where relevant)
Family goals and hopes for change
The aim is to build a complete picture of the child, identify possible triggers and patterns, and better understand the emotional, developmental, relational, and environmental factors that may be contributing to the difficulties.
Parents are supported in understanding behaviour through a developmental, attachment-informed, and emotional lens, while receiving practical and realistic strategies tailored to their family's needs.
Following the consultation, parents begin implementing the agreed strategies and recommendations at home.
The focus is on creating positive changes while strengthening understanding, connection, and confidence.
A follow-up consultation is usually scheduled a few weeks later to review progress, discuss challenges, and adjust strategies where needed.
This provides an opportunity to reflect, ask questions, deepen understanding of your child's needs, and receive ongoing guidance and support.
Some families benefit from just a few consultations, while others choose ongoing support as their child grows and new challenges emerge.
