"What is Imperialism, and Why Should We Be Against it?" In the 1920 preface to his famous work Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism, Vladimir Lenin declared imperialism to be “the eve of the social revolution of the proletariat.” Over 100 years later, Lenin’s prognosis appears to be less than plausible. The world proletarian revolution has yet to occur, yet “imperialism” remains a prominent category on the Left, among both Marxists and non-Marxists. On various fronts such as US agitation towards Iran, Venezuela, and Greenland, the Left invokes a rallying cry of “Imperialism!” Platypus seeks to investigate the meaning of imperialism as a category for the Left today, and how the Left seeks to challenge it. What is imperialism, and why should we be against it? How did Marxism seek to take up the question of imperialism? Is the Marxist response to imperialism adequate? How do you understand the relationship between imperialism, capitalism, and socialism?
