  • Found in hot springs, geysers, deep-sea vents

  • Thrives at high water temperatures (113 - 252 °F)

    • e.g. Yellowstone National Park

    • Do not confuse with thermophilic bacteria, which are some of the most ancient organisms on Earth

  • Possess enzymes stable at high temperatures, which are used in molecular biology for polymerase chain reactions (PCR)
