AmberChes Spirits is an award winning distillery situated in the Swan Valley with a focus on gin and limoncello. They hope to create a venue that encourages people to sit, relax and enjoy the views while tasting their wonderful products.
Initial consultations highlighted 3 main goals:
1. Screen the residence
2. Handle waterlogging
3. Reveal the view to the hills
The clients also wanted to set aside space for growing the botanicals used in Gins, and create an ample alfresco area while retaining lawn space.
Simon and I highlighted the entrance from the road as a point for design consideration and discouraging patrons from parking near the residence by re-aligning the driveway and changing the vegetation conditions.
We formalised the primary parking through the use of angled bays and dedicated disabled parking and created a defined area for overflow parking in the case of events.
A gently slpoing lawn gives the impression of a raised alfresco which overlooks the vineyard and hills to the east. Jacarandas provide vital shade in the summer and light in the winter. Grapes or other ornamental vines climb the pergola like a trellis. Ag-pipes drain excess water to a purpose-built swale.
The uninitiated are guided gently but unequivocally along the path by connecting moments. The ring is one such possibility of a moment--a sign that says come on in, but without the use of words.
The brief for the planting palette is naturalistic and beautiful. With a focus on local natives, botanicals and aromatics, the planting grounds the visitor in Western Australia, the Swan Valley and ultimately AmberChes.
