Glossary of Planning Terminology - Help
This list of terms used by a council's planning department is not intended to be comprehensive, simply to help with the more common terms used whose meaning may not be clear.
Appeal - An application refused by the planning authority where the applicant has asked the Government Planning Inspectorate to review that decision and either Allow the development or Dismiss it.
Approve with conditions - The development has been permitted subject to conditions which must be raised by new applications.
Deadline - The date by which comments are accepted by the planning department.
Delegated Decision - The application will be decided by the council's planning department without recourse the council's planning committee.
Discharged - An application about how conditions attached to a previous applications will be met has been approved.
Full planning permission - Most applications are of this type.
Outline Planning Permission - An application that allows developers to seek approval for the general principles of a development without needing to provide full, detailed plans upfront.
Prior approval - An applications made under Permitted Development Rights (PDR), for minor developments, e.g. home extensions.
Recommendation - The planning officer has made their recommendation but the decision notice has not been issued or it is subject to the planning committee approval.
Under Consultation - The planning department is still accepting comments.
Valid - Applications are not available on the Council's website until validated.
