How to Submit a Planning Application
You have the right to support or reject a planning application as well as make general comments about it. Any representations that are submitted online will be published and available to view on the website for your Local Planning Authority. Furthermore, any representations that are received through the post will also be published for viewing by the general public.
The easiest way for you to make a comment about a planning
application is to use the website for your local planning authority, click the
link to your chosen planning application, and make a public comment using the
option to do so on that page. If you choose to send your comment through the
post, you must include the application reference number.
Advice When Making a Comment
Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, the council has the obligation to make the name and addresses of planning applicants available to the public. This is known as the Statutory Register, and comments that are made in support or against the application will also be deemed as part of this.
Therefore, it is important that you only include
information that you are comfortable with being publicly available, especially
as it will include your address and name. No personal information of other
people should be given without their expressed consent.
However, there are cases where your personal information
can be kept private. The circumstances tend to be exceptional, such as if you
are a public figure, but you can write to your local council with details of
why you would like your personal information withheld when people view your
comments. This is done on a case by case basis, and your personal information
can still be released reactively in response to requests from, for example, the
Environmental Information Regulations.
Ensure Your Comments are Valid
A comment alone is not enough to have a planning application rejected unless the proposed adjustments go against planning policy. This includes cases where there are multiple objections or even petitions made by the local people.
Objections that refer to the following will not be upheld
· Impact on property values
· Predicted noise during construction
· Who will use the development when it is done
· Disputes with neighbours

Not to make your objections personal
It is important to ensure that your comments are valid
and address concerns that are in breach of planning policies as opposed to
personal vendettas or tastes.
