Clear Vision
I. We must turn to God’s Word to see clearly in life, because it clarifies the way we should go (v. 105)
a. Humanity is lost in the darkness of sin without the light of God’s Word to illuminate their hearts and minds in truth. Only God’s Word is able to illuminate all paths at all times bringing light and clarity to all life. It lights the sinner’s path through conviction to lead them to Christ, and it lights the believer’s way to expose the dangers and incorrect paths in life by teaching us the character and priorities of God which clearly show the path to glory. (v. 105; Exod. 40:36-38; Prov. 4:18; John 1:4-5, 9-11; 8:12; 2 Cor. 4:3-4; Eph. 5:8)
II. We must turn to God’s Word to see clearly in life, because it clarifies the way we should act (v. 106)
a. God’s law is written on all human hearts where it serves as a fundamental moral compass and conscience which guides us. Therefore, humanity is generally sufficient at governing themselves in life’s black and white moral decisions, but most of life is quite gray. And left without an objective standard, we’re very skilled at justifying our desires. Only through studying, meditating on, and applying God’s Word to our lives, will we be equipped to understand and consistently and properly apply the clear righteous principles of who God is to our lives so that our choices and actions glorify Him. (v. 106; Prov. 12:15; 14:12; 16:25; 18:17; 29:27; Ps. 19:11-13; 23:3; John 3:18-21; Rom. 2:11-16; Eph. 5:7-11; Jas. 1:19-25; 1 John 1:5-7)
III. We must turn to God’s Word to see clearly in life, because it clarifies our hope in suffering (v. 107)
a. God’s Word illuminates our understanding of the affliction which is common to all lives. Whether corrective, constructive, or God honoring, God’s Word reveals that He sovereignly uses all suffering to bring about His good. Without God’s Word, the world clings hopelessly to fleeting and insufficient illumination in suffering. But the illumination of God’s Word provides renewal and hope which never disappoints, even in life’s darkest times. (v. 107; Ps. 19:7; 23:4, 6; 107:67, 71; John 9:1-3; Rom. 5:3-5; 8:18, 28; 2 Cor. 4:16-18; 1 Pet. 5:10-11)
IV. We must turn to God’s Word to see clearly in life, because it clarifies the way we should worship (v. 108)
a. True and deep worship of God comes from a growing understanding of who He is through His Word. As we discover the rich truth of who God is and how He loves us, we’re compelled to freely worship Him with all our heart, and desire to know Him more, love Him more, and live more pleasing to Him. (v. 108; Ps. 19:8, 14; 22:3; 29:2; 66:4; Isa. 29:13-14; Matt. 4:10; John 4:23-24; Rom. 1:25; 12:1-2; 1 John 4:8-19)
V. We must turn to God’s Word to see clearly in life, because it clarifies the dangers we face (Vv. 109-110)
a. The psalmist was in danger because he lived a life of truth according to God’s ordinances, but the physical danger he faced was nothing compared to the spiritual danger in life. God’s Word clarifies the spiritual danger all humanity faces as children of Adam separated from God by sin. If we’re living for Christ, so that others might see Him in us and be compelled to turn to Him, we must expect the attack of the enemy. Only God’s Word illuminates our minds and paths to the spiritual battle in life and equips and protects us to endure the attacks so that we don’t stray from His path. (v. 109-110; Matt. 5:10-12; 7:13-23; 10:28; 12:43-45; 16:21-26; John 8:42-44; Rom. 5:12-21; 2 Cor. 5:14-16; Gal. 2:20; Eph. 6:10-17; 2 Tim. 3:12; 1 Pet. 5:8-9)
VI. We must turn to God’s Word to see clearly in life, because it clarifies our true inheritance (Vv. 111-112)
a. The psalmist rejoices in the reality of the weight, magnitude, and eternal blessing of God’s Word. His Word is the only truth which can set us free and renew us daily. All other information, possessions, or accomplishments will be consumed by time, but God’s Word and the work it accomplishes by moving us to conviction, repentance, and faith in Christ will never pass away. We must build our lives on His Word. When continually cultivated, His Word produces wealth, satisfaction, and stability to our lives available nowhere else; and brings continual and eternal joy to our hearts no matter our circumstances. (v. 111; Ps. 119:57; Isa. 40:6-8; Jer. 29:11-13; Matt. 7:24-27; 24:35; John 8:30-36; 17:17; Eph. 1:3-14, 18-23; Phil. 3:7-16; 1 Pet. 1:13-25)
