Pixar Animation Studios is an American computer animation film studio based in Emeryville, California and a part of the Walt Disney Studios group. The studio has earned 27 Academy Awards, eight Golden Globes, and three Grammys, along with many other awards and acknowledgements.

As poor sales of Pixar's computers threatened to put the company out of business, Lasseter's animation department began producing computer-animated commercials for outside companies. Early successes included campaigns for Tropicana, Listerine, Life Savers, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In April 1990, Jobs sold Pixar's hardware division, including all proprietary hardware technology and imaging software, to Vicom Systems, and transferred 18 of Pixar's approximate 100 employees.

The same year, Pixar moved from San Rafael to Richmond, California. During this period, Pixar continued its relationship with Walt Disney Feature Animation, a studio whose corporate parent would ultimately become its most important partner. In 1991, after a tough start of the year when about 30 employees in the company's computer department had to go (including the company's president, Chuck Kolstad), which reduced the total number of employees to just 42, Pixar made a $26 million deal with Disney to produce three 3D computer-animated feature films, the first of which was Toy Story. At that point, the software programmers, who were doing RenderMan and CAPS, and Lasseter's animation department, who made television commercials and a few shorts for Sesame Street, was all that was left of Pixar.

While some of Pixar's first animators were former cel animators, including John Lasseter, they also came from stop motion animation and/or computer animation or were fresh college graduates. A large number of animators that make up the animation department at Pixar were hired around the time Pixar released A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2. Although Toy Story was a successful film, it was Pixar's only feature film at the time. The majority of the animation industry was and is still located in Los Angeles, California, while Pixar is located 350 miles north in the San Francisco Bay Area. Also, traditional 2-D animation was still the dominant medium for feature animated films.

When Lasseter was placed in charge of all Disney and Pixar animation following the merger, he immediately put all sequels on hold; Disney stated that Toy Story 3 had been canceled. However, in May 2006, it was announced that Toy Story 3 was back in pre-production, under Pixar's control when a new plot had been conceived.

Pixar celebrated 25 years of animation in 2011 with the release of its twelfth feature film Cars 2. Pixar had celebrated its 20th anniversary with the first Cars. The Pixar: 25 Years of Animation exhibition was held at the Oakland Museum of California from July 2010 until January 2011. The exhibition tour debuts in Hong Kong and was held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin, between March 27 and July 11, 2011.

Similar to George Lucas' 1138, the letter-number sequence A113 is an animation in-joke that appears in all Pixar films to date, except Monsters, Inc. It is a reference to one of the room numbers at CalArts (where several of the employees are alumni).

Animators just focus on the animating side of things. Pixar, and all other animation/vfx studios, also need modelers, lighters, texture painters, lookdev artists, riggers, FX artists, compositors, and various other people to complete their production pipeline. Animators may consider themselves the rock stars of the biz and it seems these days that most people wanting to break into the industry want to be animators, but they comprise just a single department amongst many in the animation process.

The good news is, there are hundreds of game and vfx studios you could potentially get jobs like those in. I would not set my sights so specifically on one (very high-end) studio like Pixar. If you truly love the work - and you honestly have to to survive in this industry - you would probably enjoy doing it at any reasonable shop or studio.

As part of the agreement, NVIDIA will also contribute ray-tracing technology to Pixar's OpenSubdiv Project, an open-source initiative to promote high-performance subdivision surface evaluation on massively parallel CPU and GPU architectures. This will enable rendering of complex Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces in animation with unprecedented precision.

And then to the right, behind locked security doors, you'll have all of the creative offices, which includes animation offices, development offices, story department, motion capture (the "acting room" where animators can film themselves or other beings for animation references), etc.

What sets Pixar apart from other animation studios is its meticulous film making process, which combines technical expertise with a deep commitment to storytelling and quality control. This process is guided by three corner stones: proprietary animation software, a culture of quality control, and a focus on its talented workforce.

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon that represents California and the Bay Area, but across the Bay and the Oakland Bay Bridge is Emeryville, home of the infamous animation studio, Pixar. A studio where the names John Lassetter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter are synonymous with Walt Disney, a studio that brings amazing storytelling to animation.

Unlike other studios, Pixar is not open to the public. I was so fortunate to visit Pixar for The Good Dinosaur Event during a Disney-Pixar press junket. The very place world-class animators, genius technical artists, incredible imaginative directors, and superheroes of other teams that create, animate and tell the best stories.

However, Quaroni is not a voice actor by trade. He began his career at Pixar in production and spent several years crafting custom software for the animation process. In addition to Cars, Quaroni has contributed to movies including Toy Story II, Toy Story III, and Monsters Inc.

The first step to getting a job at Pixar is to have a strong portfolio.
