Holidays
On outpatient rotations, federal holidays are usually off
On inpatient rotations, federal holidays are covered by weekend staffing
Both medicine and pediatrics utilize holiday coverage for Christmas and New Years -- working one of the holidays and off for the other
Three weeks of vacation per year
Additional five days of time off around the winter holidays
General Inpatient Pediatrics
Color teams (Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Silver).
Generally 2 week blocks, off sequence with seniors by a week
Morning sign-out at 6 AM, senior sign out at 7 AM
2 interns, 1 senior resident, usually 2 medical students +/- AI
No formal cap, numbers vary based on season
Interns split up days short/long call
Short you get out when your work is done
Long call stays until sign out at 7 PM
Color teams have a specialty service that is too small to have their own service that it admits to
Purple ➡️ Eating Disorders
Red ➡️ Rheumatology
Green ➡️ Toxicology
Blue ➡️ Genetics
Subspecialty Inpatient Pediatrics
Heme/Endo, Renal/Pulm, GI, Neurology, Oncology
Functions the same as general pediatrics
Combined services usually have two AM rounds and two teaching times
Weekends
Three weekend shifts (7AM - 7PM Saturday, 7PM - 7AM Overnight, 7AM - 7PM Sunday)
Cover sister teams, one general pediatrics + one subspecialty (i.e. Red + GI)
Interns preround on all patients, attendings write notes
No 24 hour shifts for interns on pediatrics!
Emergency Department
Two week rotation at CHP ED
Cover medium acuity rooms, with some overflow for high acuity rooms based on census
NICU
One month rotation at Magee Women's Hospital
Inpatient care of babies admitted to the NICU
Arrive at 6:30AM for sign out
Sign-out to overnight APP at 4PM
Newborn Nursery
One month rotation at Magee Women's Hospital
Arrive at 7AM for pre-rounding
Bedside rounds at 8AM
Afternoons at Newborn Clinic in Oakland (12:45-5PM)
Split weekends with group of 3-4 other interns
Free garage parking for Med-Peds residents at CHP
Small breakfast provided at morning conferences
Fed lunch at noon conference at CHP
Gym at CHP with discounted rates for employees to workout there

One month of outpatient medicine/pediatrics at our Turtle Creek clinic
Focus on interdisciplinary education and understanding how to be a PCP
Special sessions with diabetes educators, physical therapists, phlebotomy
Often when PGY-1s take STEP/COMLEX 3
Inpatient Medicine
Two months of inpatient medicine floors at Montefiore Hospital ("Monte")
All interns start on Monte together for their first block of Medicine
Teams by geographical location within a hospital
Generally cap team at 14-15 patients
One senior resident and two interns
Resident independent rounding for 4 days of the week
Daily Schedule
Arrive at 6:45 AM for sign-out
Rounds at 9AM
Leave at 6PM for sign-out to night team
No nights or 24 hour shifts
Work one weekend day each week of the block
Inpatient Cardiology
One month of inpatient adult cardiology at Presbyterian Hospital (Pavillion or "Pav")
Two weeks of general cardiology, one week of advanced heart failure, one week of nights
One intern and one resident paired per team, cardiology fellow and attending
Daily schedule similar to inpatient medicine floors
No 24 hours shifts for interns
Medical ICU
One month of adult medical ICU at Shadyside Hospital (SHY ICU)
Proximity to Hillman Cancer Center, will see many oncology patients
Three weeks of day shifts, one week of nights
Roughly two 28 hour shifts for interns during this month
Team caps of 9-11 patients
Daily schedule similar to inpatient medicine
Free garage parking for Med-Peds residents at all adult hospitals (at top of hill)
Bus line right by all adult hospitals
Fed lunch at noon conference while on Monte floors

No morning report for interns, this begins starting PGY-2 on medicine

Weekdays 12-1PM noon conference lectures or Department of Medicine Grand Rounds

X+Y+Z scheduling with continuity clinic four half days each week while on Z block
No continuity clinic when on inpatient rotations, ED, or ICU
Medicine
One continuity clinic day per week when on medicine electives
No continuity clinic when on inpatient medicine or ICU
