As interns, Jonathan Li and Anna Maria Coronata (current fellows) were recognized for their teaching and were nominated by medical students among all residents in the UPMC system.
Kate Leyens, current Med-Peds Hospitalist and former graduate, was also awarded this as a resident! She graduated from the Internal Medicine Academic Clinician-Educator Scholars (ACES) Fellowship.
Our pre-clinic conference curriculum originated as a resident driven QI initiative (Class of 2020). It was designed to improve resident satisfaction, engagement, and learning of ambulatory medicine.
It is a case-based curriculum regularly reviewed and revamped by a commitee of our residents to ensure that our teaching material is up-to-date.
A different topic is covered each clinic session. With X+Y+Z schedule on pediatrics, we cover multiple topics each week while on pediatrics Z block.
The curriculum spans 2 years, effectively allowing for 2 passes throughout the duration of residency.
We have a dedicated Med-Peds Noon Conference every week comprised of both guest and resident lectures.
We host Med Peds Grand Rounds on a monthly basis!
Our journal club meets once per month.
We review board-relevant statistics/research concepts and discuss an article selected by one of our residents.
We always have food and often we have dogs!
These are semi-annual half-day retreats filled with fun, friends, food, competitions and professional development.
Quarterly EKG lectures and workshops at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh for pediatric residents during noon conference.
This Med-Ed project was developed by former chief resident and current pediatric cardiology fellow Dr. Amanda Krauss! Currently lead by current PGY-4 resident Julia Pantalone, alongside other categorical pediatric residents.
On both Medicine and Pediatrics we have daily morning report and noon conference.
On the Pediatric side, morning report on Fridays is replaced by the renowned Zitelli Rounds where a diagnostic dilemma case is presented to residents, fellows, and faculty. Residents work together to solve the case with support from fellows and faculty.
Grand Rounds occur weekly for Medicine and Pediatrics.
Medical Education Certificate Track
Designed to provide residents with additional training and hands-on teaching experiences to cultivate and further develop the skills and core competencies needed to thrive as a clinician-educator.
This certificate track requires two non-clinical electives, Principles in Medical Education and Resident as Teachers, each 4 weeks long. Additionally, there are monthly workshops where residents present on topics in Med Ed!
Course is co-directed by our very own Kate Leyens!
Pediatric Residents in Medical Education (PRIME)
A program for residents interested in Med-Ed to gain additional education through lectures, journal clubs, meetings, and teaching opportunities.
Med-Peds in PRIME Leadership: John Szymusiak (APD) and Allison Doyle (PGY-4)
Enhancement of Medical Skills (EMS)
Opportunity to work one-on-one with medical students who may need additional support during their pediatrics rotation.
Teaching Resident Elective
A non-clinical elective for PGY-2+ residents to work on their teaching skills. Residents help to facilitate third-year student workshops while on their pediatrics clerkship and host board review during pediatrics noon conference.
