Washing your hair is a crucial part of hair care. While in theory, it seems simple, there are many ways in which people can wash their hair wrong and end up damaging their hair roots and ends.
Every time you wash your hair, you should be shampooing twice. The first shampoo removes dirt and oil, and the second deep cleans the scale. Washing twice also helps to reduce greasy hair, and your hair can go longer in between washes.
Using a hair mask helps to add to a more glossy outcome. To apply, use the same method as applying conditioner. The more damaged your hair is, the more you should use a hair mask to add mositure. Go to the recommended products page to check out good hair masks.
Sqeeze out as much water as possible to help conditioner work to its best ability. Divide your hair into two parts and apply the conditioner to your hands. Spread in your hands and then apply to each section of your hair. Apply to lengths and ends, especially on your ends. Leave on for two minutes and rinse.
In your second wash, after lathering and applying shampoo to your hair, use a scalp massager to lather further and improves blood flow and removes build up in hair. When using this product, you MUST NOT cause tangles by rotating the massagers around all over your head. Place the massager in a spot, massage for a few seconds, and move to a new spot. If you don't have a hair massager, check out the Product Recommendations Page!
When you shampoo, never apply the shampoo directly from the bottle tp your hair. Apply the shampoo to your hands first, add a bit of water and mix together in your hands. Then apply the lathered shampoo to your hair. This is done to ensure a better clean on your hair, spread the shampoo more evenly and reduce hair damage from raw shampoo as it can be harsh on the hair.
Don't brush wet hair! The wetter the hair, the more easily it seperates from the scalp. Therefore, the more you brush wet hair, the more hair you are likely to lose! IF YOU HAVE CURLY OR COILLY HAIR, THIS DOESN’T APPLY!
Air-drying hair is better than using a blow dryer. You reduce the amount of heat used in your hair and this helps to minimise split ends. If you do need to blow dry your hair, use a heat protector (check the product recommendations page)
There are multiple ways in which someone can protect their hair from damage and breakage. Protecting your hair promotes healthy and longer hair, and helps to reduce hair damage!
Always wear a protective hairstyle to sleep. Whether this be a plait, a space bun, or heatless curls, make sure you do not go to bed with loose hair. When you sleep with loose hair, you hair follicles rub against you pillows, causing breakage.
Wearing a satin or silk bonnet to sleep helps to protect hair against breakage. Normal pillowcases are very rough to the hair causing hectic breakage and split ends. A bonnet's fabric is soft, therefore it reduces hair breaking. This is best used for protecting thick and curly hair.
Using a satin or silk pillowcase does a similar thing to what the bonnet does, but the added benefit is that it also reduces friction on your face, which means morning redness and irriation is reduced on the skin.
For best results, use a protective hairstyle, a bonnet and a silk pillowcase every night!
Always oil your hair before bed. Every. Single. Night. Apply your hair oil to your lengths and ends, using the praying hands motion to spread the oil evenly. To find your hair type, and be able to purchase the best hair oil for your hair, cut ONE strand of your hair and place in a cup of water. Check the glass in 5 minutes. If your hair floats on top, you have low porosity hair (your hair follicles are packed closely together). If your hair is floating in the middle, you have medium porosity hair (hair cuticles are balanced). If your hair has sunk to the bottom, you have high porosity hair, meaning your cuticles are damaged (if your hair is often frizzy, you also probably have low porosity hair).
Always, always use heat protectant when using heat on your hair. Check the product recommendations for the best heat protectants.
Never sleep with wet hair, and if you blow dry it before bed, use a heat protector.
Use soft, silk scrunchies or hair ties that won’t pull out as much hair.
Eat the correct foods to increase hair strength. Check out the Foods for Hair page.
Buy a scalp serum to massage into your scalp, and wash out in the shower, to manage greasy hair and promote longer hair.
