About us

SINTEF is one of Europe's largest research institutes, with multidisciplinary expertise within technology, natural sciences and social sciences. SINTEF is an independent foundation, having the main office in Trondheim, Norway. Together with our clients, our 2000 employees have created innovation through development and research since 1950, both for private and public sector in Norway and abroad.

The foundation's vision is technology for a better society. At SINTEF Digital, by its department for Mathematic and Cybernetics (MaC), we develop enabling technologies based on deep understanding of mathematics and cybernetics, with emphasis on algorithms, software and efficient use of computer hardware. Our application-specific solutions have high applicability across various domains. Our five main research areas is: robotics and autonomy, digital twins and mixed reality, artificial intelligence, modelling and simulations, and optimization and control.

The workshop is supported by the Research Council of Norway through the project PhysML: Structure-based machine learning for physical systems. The project is run by the Analytics and Artificial Intelligence group in the MaC department in SINTEF, Oslo, and consists of five permanent researchers and two PhD students in that group. The national academic partner is professor Elena Celledoni from NTNU, while the international partner is professor George Em Karniadakis, Brown University.

The goal of the PhysML project is to

The project aims to build on theory developed within numerical analysis and specifically the field called geometric numerical integration, which concerns numerical integrators that preserve some structure of the system they model, to create structure-preserving machine learning models.
