PoF participated in the 2026 KSPHM-KIMM Machine Data Challenge and was awarded the Encouragement Award (μ₯λ €μ) for finishing 7th place out of 80 teams and 259 participants. This challenge was a competition to verify the performance and applicability of AI-based prognosis on actual bearing degradation data provided by Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM). Through this experience PoF members acquired experience in developing AI-based prognosis algorithms based on real machinery signal data. Deeper research and understanding of AI-based prognosis will be studied further within the lab.Β

Prof. Changwoon Han was promoted to Full Professor in 2026 and has taken on the role of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at SUNY Korea, succeeding Prof. Hamid Hefazi. Prof. Han joined SUNY Korea in 2017 after moving from the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), where he had served as Principal Researcher, and earned tenure during his time at the department.

JiMin Shin, Kent Legada, Jaewon Lee, Juhwan Kim, and SeungIl Park, a combined graduate/undergraduate team (Team 1SUNY) from the PoF lab, received an "Encouragement Award" (μ₯λ €μ) in the Young Engineers Group at the 2nd KSME-LG Future Home Tech Challenge, co-hosted by the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) and LG Electronics, in November 2023. Their entry was titled A Fault Prognostics and Diagnostics Technology for Air-Conditioner Refrigerant Leak Detection Sensors.

The Mechanical Engineering Department at SUNY Korea hosted a Collaborating Seminar with the Biomedical Engineering Department of Purdue University on June 24, 2022 at SUNY Korea Academic Building C103. The two departments came together to discuss and plan future collaboration in research and student exchange programs. Prof. Changwoon Han delivered a talk titled "Physics-of-Failure Based Research on Reliability," presenting the PoF lab's research alongside scholars from both institutions.

The award is given to a member of the society who has made significant contributions to the development of experimental mechanics in the fields of materials, fracture, and reliability.

The award is presented to one of the best papers among those presented at the conference. The paper was titled Failure Analysis of Si Solar Module under Thermal Cycling Using Electroluminescence Method.

His talk, titled "Reliability Evaluation and Improvement Case Studies of Automotive Module Components," shared the PoF lab's research perspectives on distinguishing random and wear-out failures from field data and applying reliability-improvement processes for automotive electronic components.

Prof. Changwoon Han was invited to deliver a talk at the 2020 Hyundai Motor Company Researcher Technology Forum ("Connect the Future, Create the Mobility"), co-hosted with the Automotive Industry Division of the Society of PHM Korea and held online on September 16, 2020. His talk, titled "PHM Research Strategy for Electronic Systems toward Future Mobility," shared the PoF lab's perspectives on reliability-based fault diagnosis and prognostics for vehicle systems.

Prof. Changwoon Han and SeungIl Park received the 2018 KSME Best Journal Paper Award (λνκΈ°κ³ννλ Όλ¬Έμ) for an outstanding paper in Transactions of the KSME, Series A. The award recognized their paper, "Development of Field-applicable Health-Monitoring Method for Solar Cell Array," published in Transactions of the KSME, Series A (Vol. 42, No. 5).

SeungIl Park received the Outstanding Student Paper Award (μ°μνμλ Όλ¬Έμ) from the Reliability Division of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) for his paper presented at the 2018 KSME Annual Conference. The award recognized his paper A Study on Lifetime Enhancement of Solder Joints in High-Temperature Sensors Based on Physics-of-Failure, co-authored with Prof. Changwoon Han and collaborators from KETI and SEMES.
