Day 2: Artemis Speaker
Dr. Parshati Patel
An accomplished astrophysicist, science communicator, and educator, Dr. Parshati Patel has dedicated her career to advancing STEM engagement and expanding public awareness of space science. Currently serving as an Adjunct Research Professor in the Faculty of Education at Western University, her research explores how to effectively gauge public engagement and foster interest in STEM pathways. She holds a Ph.D. in Astronomy and Planetary Science and Exploration from Western University, where her foundational research centered on young, massive stars and their surrounding disks.
A dedicated advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion, Dr. Patel actively works to create a more accessible scientific community. Drawing on her own experiences navigating the field of astronomy as a woman of colour and a former international student, she co-founded Women of Color in STEAMM Canada and the Professional Managerial Association's BIPOC Network. Through these vital initiatives and her ongoing mentorship, she builds resources for underrepresented groups and works to dismantle systemic barriers within academic and professional spheres.
Beyond her academic and advocacy work, Dr. Patel is a highly sought-after public speaker and author. Having delivered 95+ invited talks and participated in over 120 media interviews, she seamlessly blends the art and science of communication to make complex astronomical concepts accessible to all. Whether through her children's book, My Book of Stars and Planets, or her leadership on the Board of Directors for the Royal Canadian Institute for Science, Dr. Patel consistently inspires the next generation of innovators and space enthusiasts.
Day 1: Elizabeth Laird Lecture
As a distinguished quantum physicist, educator, and advocate, Dr. Shohini Ghose’s work has influenced quantum science and STEM communities worldwide. She serves as Professor of Physics and NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering at Wilfrid Laurier University, as well as Chief Technology Officer of the Quantum Algorithms Institute, leading research in quantum information science and foundational quantum physics.
Ghose is a passionate champion for equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM. As founding Director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science, she has mentored countless students, created resources for women in science, and driven systemic change in academic and professional communities.
Ghose extends her impact globally as a TED Senior Fellow, award-winning author, and public speaker, making complex quantum concepts accessible to broad audiences. Her co-founding of the Centre for Responsible Quantum Innovation and Technologies (CRQIT) reflects her commitment to leveraging quantum science for societal benefit. Ghose’s leadership, research, and advocacy are inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators in the field
