When I have a headshot client in my makeup chair the first thing I ask them is what story are we are telling? Are we making a power play so everyone knows you are the boss? Are you wanting to look approachable and amenable, or do you want to look terrifying?

If you or a makeup artist create the sleekest winged eyeliner and the most architecturally sculpted cheekbones anyone has ever seen, unless you are applying for a position in a fashion based business this will actually work against you.

Foundation should smooth your complexion, hide the under-eye bags we all have and even out your skin tone. A good makeup artist will make your skin look like skin instead of making you look overly bronzed or burying you under a thick and heavy foundation.

Your brows should be defined but not overpowering. The idea is to draw out your features, not make them dominate. An overly emphasized set of eyebrows will dominate the photo and become all the viewer sees. An under defined brow will make your eyes disappear and can make your forehead look top heavy.

Match the color of the foundation to the natural color of your skin in neck/chest area. Some people (especially with fair skin) often choose a shade darker than the skin tone, and that is fine for social events. However, in photography, always match your foundation color to the rest of your skin. If you prefer to alter the skin tone in your photograph, the whole skin color can be adjusted darker or warmer to make it look most attractive during editing.

For natural look headshots like actress audition or corporate bio, there is no need to use heavy eye makeup at all. But if you are going for more styled photographs, the eye accents should be one notch darker or vibrant.

You may want to use hairspray, gel, and other products to tame frizz and make your hair look healthy. Make sure to avoid products that give a matte look. These are fine for some situations, but not for a photo shoot. Matte finished hair will look dull and lifeless in pictures. Instead, use hair products that enhance shine. Hair shine sprays of various kinds are available for women (Biosilk spray is a favorite in the studio).

Im going to take my ID photo at the DMV today but im not sure if i can wear goth makeup or even just eyeliner and some lipstick. Have any of you had any experience with trying to take your ID photo in goth makeup? This is my first time taking an ID photo so i dont know how strict things are. We can't pinpoint when it became a thing, but the world at some point collectively accepted that passport headshots, driver's license photos, and academic portraits were never going to showcase our best and most beautiful looks on camera. TikTok user Georgia Barratt had enough with that and gave the ID photo stereotype a run for its money with a tutorial on the perfect ID photo makeup. Barratt's viral TikTok video gave an emphasis on plump skin, lifted brows and cheeks, and even contoured eyelids, officially cracking the code to an airbrushed ID-photo-ready makeup look.

Barratt's reveal of her own personal passport photo sparked a trend among the masses. The original video she shared currently holds 3 million likes and an influx of tutorial-requesting comments on behalf of TikTok users all over the world. Once she created the step-by-step tutorial of the look itself, she single-handedly influenced the hashtag #driverslicensemakeup, which stands with a total of 5.2 million views.

Under that very hashtag, makeup artist and content creator @makeupbymonicaa recreated the look and mentioned in her TikTok video that "the base is super important," referring to the cream makeup products she uses. User @mayyysoto also revealed how stunning her license photo came out after trying Barratt's routine.

Throughout Barratt's video, every makeup step points to the theme of looking "carved." Barratt began her tutorial by lifting her brows with a disposable eyebrow spooley and a dab of Got2b Glued Styling Spiking Gel.

Pay close attention to the finishing touches of Barrett's ID-ready makeup look: brown eyeliner applied to the cusp of the lash line accompanied, overlined and glossed-up lips, and a dash of shimmering shadow across the upper lids.

Skin, The Canvas: Before you apply makeup, start with smooth, toned and moisturized skin. If necessary, give yourself a facial or scrub treatment. This minimizes uneven or artificial-looking makeup application and promotes a healthy, glowing look.
