Learning Opportunities & Facilities
Below are a list of learning opportunities and local Vancouver facilities available for use (both on and off campus). As so many of us are now working remotely, we recognize that starting a podcast may require that you are podcasting from a home office or studio. For basic equipment needed to get started, please see the "Podcasting Tools" page.

Podcast Learning Opportunities at UBC
UBC DIY Media has their own podcasting toolkit, which covers the basic how-to’s of creating a podcast (project planning, equipment, editing programs, etc.). Check out their wiki for their Online Learning Community as well!
The Learning Commons , IKBLC’s Library resource has a “Recording” 101 toolkit.
Creative Writing UBC offers “Writing for New Media” (CRWR 213) and “Writing for Podcast” (CRWR 302).
Land and Food Systems Faculty Duncan McHugh teaches “Audio Storytelling” (LFS 400).
Dr. David Gaertner teaches a First Nations and Indigenous Studies course called “Indigenous New Media” (FNIS 454). Dr Gaertner’s research guide for the course, including learning resources on podcasting, can be found here.
The Coordinated Arts Program has a course podcasting project taught by Kasim Husein on autoethnography (ASTU 100).
Recording Resources & Facilities on Campus
UBC Library loans out microphones and recording devices. Available software include:
Audacity: free to download at all Mac stations
Audition (Adoble Creative Cloud): free to download at all Mac stations and select PC stations
Garageband: free to download at all Mac stations
DIY Media Studio provides access to recording space and equipment. It is offered by the Library via the Learning Commons. Equipment includes microphones and recording devices and headphones
UBC Studios provides bookable studio space and tech on campus. They also offer project management consultations and workshops.
Recording Studio (Arts ISIT) provides studio recording space, including a green screen and equipment. Available for Arts faculty and staff only.
UBC Media Makers provides step-by-step DIY guides for various media, including audio-recording. They also run a workshop every last Wednesday of the month.
Music, Art, & Architecture Library at IKBLC has three digital media rooms.
MOA Oral History Lab houses an audio and video recording and editing facility and space for language, oral history, and material culture research.
CiTR radio invites the UBC community to co-produce print, radio, and podcasts and offers studio space, equipment, studio space.
Learning Opportunities & Recording Facilities Outside of UBC
VPL Inspiration Lab has recording studios and tours of their facilities in downtown Vancouver.
SpokenWeb Montreal has its own digital toolbox featuring various software tools and programs.
TRU’s “Knowledge Mobilization and You” is a resource developed for “scholarly podcasting for [their] community”. Their toolkit features helpful videos that walk you through the process.
Scratch Media is designed for working with students on podcast projects and getting their work out in the world. This resource stems from a focus on developing strong writing.
Transom.org is a project by Atlantic Public Media that "channels new work, voices, and ideas into public media through the Internet and workshops."
