First, I suggest you listen to the song while reading this to fully grasp what I mean when describing it. You can find it here.
There are many metaphors and scenes I could use to describe "Not here, Not there, Not anywhere" by Hunter Gordon. But I want to focus on one for the meantime:
Written and Edited by Matthew Phillips
Imagine you've just gone to the movies alone, you've sat down to watch this movie you chose on a whim as a little treat for yourself, some time alone to reconnect.
This movie paints a story, a story about a teen coming of age. It's one of those movies like the hunger games: a ballad of songbirds and snakes or the perks of being a wallflower, this is the song that plays during a heartbreaking yet time-telling scene.
The scene where you leave your home town to go somewhere new and while you're driving along the road lined with green, orange and red leaf trees into the new town, this song comes on and encapsulates your emotions exactly. That is how I feel about “Not here, Not there, Not anywhere” by Hunter Gordon.
Hunter once again captures the hauntingly beautiful and soulful melody of someone coming of age with an underlying connection to specific seasons of weather. In my mind, this song represents autumn. It encapsulates someone known for their destiny, yet lost. Someone who can't seem to find their place in the world, someone one with the wind as it breezes through the trees. Now, that's just my opinion. Hunter Gordon may have had a completely different idea when creating the song which would be a great possibility for this song as well.
There is no perfect song, nor melody but what makes a song great is how it connects with people. If you have a song that connects with people on so many different levels, a song that can be interpreted many different ways, a song that paints a story- then that song is worth listening to. This comes straight from my heart, not out of a place where I feel incapable of writing negatively about someone because put simply, I don't write about music that I don't care about. Painting a story through music is so powerful and that is exactly what Hunter Gordon has done.
