The ones that are listed here are highly recommended due to their proximity to campus/the Graham Cracker and volunteer opportunity availabilities. Crisis Text Line

• Description: Answer anonymous texts from people in crisis

Greenbelt CARES

  • Location on campus determined by the volunteer
  • Must be a public place (i.e. McKeldin, Hornbake, Stamp)
• Individual volunteering only
• Description: Tutor students 1:1
  • Tutors and students matched based on academic expertise and experience with age group/grade level
  • Tutors arrange their own schedule: date, time, length of tutoring

Pregnancy Aid Center

• Proximity to Campus: 8 minutes (4700 Erie Street, College Park)
  • Alternative method of transportation: 127 bus|stop 7|walk 8 minutes to destination
• Groups and individual volunteers welcome
• Description: Focus on women's and community health
  • Opportunities for shadowing medical professionals
  • Aid patients in filling out forms for Title 10 eligibility
  • Volunteers should expect to do administrative and clerical work
  • High need for Spanish speakers

St. Ann's Center for Children, Youth and Families

• Proximity to Campus: 13 minutes (1550 Gallatin St. NE, Washington, DC)
• Groups encouraged
• Description: Run a social project with children and families living at the facility
  • Provide entertainment and food for children and mothers
    • Ideas: host a paint night, craft night, paint nails, jewelry making, vision boards, face painting
  • Events run on Saturday
    • 10:30-12noon: provide little cupcakes and apple slices
    • 11am-1pm: provide lunch (i.e. pizza, drinks, and a dessert)
    • All events: bring bottled water and/or juice boxes

Engaged Community Offshoots

• Description: Aid in projects at the Bladensburg Farm
  • No farming experience required
  • Open every Saturday from 9am-12noon from March to November

Good Knight Empowerment Network

• Description: Support ongoing projects at Good Knight Castle
  • Weeding, watering, landscaping projects
  • Social media networking and marketing volunteers
  • Volunteer opportunities every 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month

Ronald McDonald House

  • Alternative method of transportation: Carpool with ADPi (see Description below)

• Description: Prepare meals for families staying at RMH while their loved ones are at the hospital
  • Sisters from ADPi go to RMH twice a month (RMH is their national philanthropy)
    • Other chapters are welcome to join them during their trips, or they can go on their own

DC Central Kitchen

• Description: Fight hunger in the D.C. area by prepping meals
  • Morning Meal Prep: Mon-Sun 9am-12noon
  • Afternoon Meal Prep: MWF 1pm-4pm
  • Evening Meal Prep: M-F 5pm-8pm
  • Schedule volunteer shifts by signing up through the Online Volunteer Calendar
    • Plan a month or two in advance
    • Commit to the three hour shift

Junior Achievement

• Proximity to Campus: 22 minutes (JA Finance Park 960 Nalley Road, Hyattsville)
• Groups and individuals welcome
• Description: Walk students through personal finance education (no experience in finance necessary)
  • 150 students come to learn about what it takes to be financially successful
  • Volunteers guide them through a park
    • Training/orientation will happen one hour before the event
  • Length of event: about 5 hours

Little Lights Urban Ministry

• Description: Provide after-school homework help to under-served youth
  • One-time and continuous volunteering opportunities available
    • One-Day Volunteering: Arrive at 2 pm for training and provide homework help until 6 pm (M-Th)
      • Can take a group of up to 15
    • Recurring Volunteers: Fill out an application and provide regular homework help weekly

A Wider Circle

• Description: Help provide basic need items for people seeking to rise out of poverty

  • Sort donations, restock showrooms, and assist clients as they select items to take home
