Today we recapped last year and got ready to kick off this year. This year we are going to dig a little deeper with our already built understanding of how day camp and teaching STEM works to help us better serve our kids in our communities. We are going to look at some of the trouble we had last summer so that we can continue to improve!
Update and get your google site ready to go for year 2
Write a blog post about your experience last year – how have you changed? What was memorable? What were things you struggled with?
Today we explored developmentally appropriate practices. This allows us to begin to understand what students at different ages should be able to accomplish and how long we might be able to keep each group focused. This information can help inform us, as teachers, to better engage all of our young learners
Go through the lessons HERE
Decide when you would use each lesson for which age group based on developmentally appropriate practices
Describe problems you may have had with the lessons
Explain how you might alter these lessons to better fit different aged students
Get through as many lessons as possible in 4 hours.
Read through the student engagement strategies - how have you used these? - blog post
Come up with a list of 15 things that kids aged 6 - 10 are currently excited about - research! Learn about them!
Write a blog post about the teacher that keeps you most engaged - watch what they do and explain.
Pick one of the following
Personal Reflection:
Write a reflection on your own experiences with neurodiversity. Consider if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder or if you've witnessed neurodiversity in your school or community.
Reflect on how these experiences have shaped your understanding of neurodiversity and any stereotypes or misconceptions you may have held.
Your classroom reflection
Consider how you can create a more inclusive classroom environment for all students, regardless of neurodiversity.
Case Study Analysis:
Find a case study or personal account of a student with neurodiversity or a tv character who presents in this way (atypical?)
Analyze the challenges faced by the student, their strengths, and the strategies used to support them.
Reflect on how you could apply similar strategies in your own teaching practice.
Also finish the lessons - what you liked and what you didn’t and how you would change it.

This week we walked through last year's classes and you gave us your feedback in order to improve this coming years STEM class.
The Science of the STEM
Due 5/6
The hands-on part is always fun and our slideshows do the best to explain exactly what is needed but is there science we are missing? Is there overarching science that we haven’t yet talked about or should include more - ie. Do we talk enough about engineering or building techniques in general?
The more information we have – the more you can help engage students with fun information. How does this STEM apply to our life? (ie do any “dinosaurs” live today - birds?)
Create a “Did you know?” google slide with some of the science
Some ideas:
Compass - How does a compass work?
Coding - where does coding come from? How has coding evolved?
Habitats and animals - how do they coincide?
Robots - history of robots?
Engineering - things to know about building – what makes things stronger? Weaker?
Something else that interests you.
Today we shared out about engaging our youth in the Science behind STEM. We talked about how knowing the information and engaging our youth in that information can be two different things. We then looked at STEM identity and began to consider why STEM identity is important and our own STEM identities.
Write about:
What is your STEM Identity?
What defines your STEM experience? What experiences have you had?
What connects you to STEM? How do you feel about your STEM skills?
& pick some of these things to consider and write about
What is STEM identity?
Why is having STEM identity important?
How can we help our young ones develop STEM identity?

Today learned a bit about Culture and contemplated what culture meant to each of us. We began to examine how culture may play into how we interact in our teaching and our learning.
Use this document to begin to explore your own culture more deeply. Do the assignment on this sheet and make it a blog post on your website.
Reflect on your own leadership traits. How will you be a leader this summer? Which situations will you need to work to build your leadership skills? Specifically which one or two skills will you look to build?
Examine and write a few sentences about a leader or leadership style that inspires you. How will you model their style?
Begin your own leadership and professionalism journey through writing a letter to your students or staff - feel free to use the template in the slideshow
Organize your lessons for the summer, so that you feel ready to go.
