My Path To Teaching: An Autobiography

I am a librarian by profession. I currently serve as Documentalist/Indexer and Managing Editor of the academic journal Caribbean Curriculum. In addition to the responsibilities attached to the aforementioned positions, I am also responsible for Information Literacy Instruction. Additionally, I have also guest lectured courses in West Indian Literature, Creative Writing and Communication Skills at the University level, albeit not at the UWI. Prior to becoming a qualified librarian I functioned as a teacher. My path to teaching began with the teaching of English at the secondary level.

Only recently (2018) I joined the faculty at the University of the West Indies in the position of Documentalist Librarian. In this position one of my responsibilities is the teaching Information Literacy to graduate students at the School of Education (SoE). Completion of the CUTL course is part of my contractual obligation to assist in the effective fulfilment of my obligation to teach. Arising from this programme, I have designed a full information literacy course which is currently in the course review process to be incorporated into the curriculum at the SoE, UWI St Augustine.

Teaching and learning had always been at the forefront of my philosophy and functioning. It has always been my intention to design and execute a full information literacy course for credit. In this regard I negotiated the scheduling of information literacy instruction into a course for credit during my stint as Library Director at the USC. This was documented in chapter 20 of "Caribbean Libraries in the 21st Century". Introducing a full information literacy course for credit into the curriculum will represent one of my major accomplishments as a Librarian/Lecturer.
