Project leader – Anastasiia Shevchenko, PhD, Senior Researcher, Department of History, University of Lausanne, Switzerland
The project is aimed at researching and highlighting cases of destruction of cultural values of Ukraine as a result of the full-scale military invasion of Russia.
As of September 12, more than 550 different monuments and cultural objects of Ukraine were destroyed, but this is a list of the most significant destructions.
Тhe most shocking part here is not so much the looting, which happens in wars, but the intentional and cynical destruction of cultural heritage – both reclaiming pre-modern objects as part of an extended Russian historical space (including Greek and Sarmatian materials), and erasing the Ukrainian modernist cultural tradition which was in dialogue with Russian culture but was not part of it, thus in many ways completing the work of erasure during Stalinist times.
Russia continues the totalitarian Soviet tradition, trying to erase the original Ukrainian culture by destroying everything "prominent": cultural institutions, cultural space, personalities and cultural memory.
The goal of the project is to document interviews with cultural figures of the South of Ukraine who are witnesses of the occupation and crimes against culture and to draw international attention to Russian aggression against Ukrainian cultural institutions and Ukrainian artists. As part of the project, interviews with cultural figures of Southern Ukraine have already been recorded, which will be translated and distributed in the near future.
