I am a linguist and a Hispanicist with a fascination with "complex" linguistic structures.
My interest in possessive structures was sparked in Linda McManness' Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics course at Baylor University. In offering feedback on a classmate's paper, Linda pointed out that in Spanish, even though a possessor might be plural, it would be paired with a singular possessum to indicate a 'one-each' meaning.
Although I had been speaking Spanish for eight years and was an MA candidate at the time, I had never realized this was the case. So, when I had the opportunity to conduct experimental research on the topic in Pilar Chamorro's Advanced Spanish Pragmatics and Syntax and Semantics courses at the University of Georgia, I seized it. Pilar provided invaluable guidance as I designed the survey instrument, distributed it, and analyzed the data.
