Coastal Flooding. Two types of flooding occur in Mount Pleasant. The first type is localized flooding due to blocked or inadequate drainage facilities. The second is due to rising water caused by tropical storms and hurricanes, commonly known as the “storm surge”.
Mount Pleasant got its name from one of the old plantations that used to operate East of the Cooper, but this wasn't it's first moniker. According to the Town of Mount Pleasant website, the 1680 settlement was first referred to on a map as “Old Woman's Point” or “North Point.”
Based on FBI crime data, Mount Pleasant is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to South Carolina, Mount Pleasant has a crime rate that is higher than 29% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.
