I always do the first session as a "try-before-you-buy" so you can get an idea whether you want to work with me or not. We'll have a look at a couple of questions and you can see how I do things.. You'll learn how to read questions for perfect understanding and how to give perfect answers.
I don't make science easy; YOU do that.
You do it by developing MASTERY. And you do that by understanding the big picture and the fine details that make the picture.
I often have students saying, "At first, I thought that question was hard, but actually, it was easy." What they meant was, "At first, I had no idea. Now I understand it perfectly."
It's very simple, really: you want confidence in your own learning. And confidence means knowing five things:
subject knowledge
experimental details
correct vocabulary
how to do calculations neatly and quickly
how to explain (i.e. knowing the key words and how to put them together.)
that you need to get or exceed your target grade.
Just imagine yourself walking into the exam room. How do you see yourself? You are 100% confident that you are well-prepared and can handle anything they throw at you.
Usually, we will start with an overview of a topic and make sure that it’s well understood. We’ll look at videos and printed resources. I’ll give you a summary sheet that encapsulates all the essential learning.
After that, we’ll look at a question from a past paper.
You will learn the perfect approach to every kind of question and how to give a perfect answer neatly and quickly. Doesn't that sound like the perfect exam preparation?
That means finding what you're already pretty good at and making it perfect. Find out what you're not very good at and work on it.
One problem with British education is that we aren't taught thinking skills. In tutorials you will learn how to think clearly and neatly:
1- Think,
2 - Do,
3 - Think.
Whenever you finish a problem or answer a question, ask yourself: "What did I learn from it? Can I do it even better and even faster next time?"
Progress is "built in."
The very first thing you will learn is to read with a pencil; that completely eliminates misreading and allows you to see and underline the key information. You might also make quick sketches to help you.
Investigate diagrams very carefully; make sure you understand each and every part and component.
I will then ask you what you are thinking. My job is then to listen carefully and offer any guidance you need. If you need any additional teaching, we'll do it there and then.
You will never get stuck or feel helpless because I show you how to guarantee your own success. You will learn a problem-solving that all STEM people use:
Think about what you're going to do - collect all the knowledge and key vocabulary
Do it neatly and completely ensuring you answer precisely the question asked
Think about what you did
Once you have got to the perfect answer, I'll ask you <the ultimate question>:
"If you see another question on this topic, can you ace it?"
That's the question that guarantees great progress.
