Djent (/dnt/) is a subgenre of progressive metal characterized by its use of complex and heavily syncopated rhythm patterns.[1][2] Its distinctive sound is that of high-gain, distorted, palm-muted, down-tuned strings. The name "djent" is an onomatopoeia of this sound.[3][4][5]

Some members of the metal community have criticized the term "djent", either treating it as a short-lived fad, openly condemning it, or questioning its validity as a genre. However, bands such as Tesseract and Animals as Leaders have received positive critical reception and multiple awards. Post-metal band Rosetta is noted as saying, "Maybe we should start calling doom metal 'DUNNN'".[24] In response to a question about "djent", Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe stated in 2011, "There is no such thing as 'djent'; it's not a genre."[25] Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter similarly opined in 2016 that "I thoroughly can get djent, I even have great appreciation for the bands, and I mean Meshuggah is one of my favorite bands. But it's just not a genre. It's just metal."[26] In an interview with Guitar Messenger, Periphery guitarist Misha Mansoor said:

Tosin Abasi of Animals as Leaders takes a more lenient view of the term, stating that there are specific characteristics that are common to djent bands, and as a result the term can be legitimately used as a genre. While stating that he personally strives not to subscribe exclusively to any one genre, he makes the point that a genre is defined by the ability to associate common features between different artists. He says that in this way, it is possible to view djent as a genre describing a particular niche of modern progressive metal.[29]

Although this is my first time covering this genre on the blog, I love me some instrumental jazz fusion. You can listen to it while falling asleep, working out, playing videogames, or just have it play in the background throughout the day. There is an incredible amount of variety in jazz fusion, yet most new acts these days are just Plini worship. However, Von Citizen decided to go for a more refreshing approach with Outlier and cover as many styles as possible in only seven tracks.

Wikipedia says that djent is in fact a genre, specifically a subgenre of progressive metal characterized by complex rhythms and distorted sounds. Naysayers maintain that djent is merely the distorted sound that literally sounds like DJENT DJENT DJENT when you aggressively go at it on the guitar. To quote a Redditor explaining their dislike for djent,

Djent is basically the Pluto of metal subgenres, with its validity up to debate and such. Like Pluto, it is socially acceptable to dunk on djent. After all, the term djent was allegedly coined by the Swedish band Meshuggah as a drunken djoke.

The prog-metalcore virtuosos helmed by Misha Mansoor and Spencer Sotelo are largely credited as forerunners in djent, a genre-not-genre of metal that's rooted in ultra down-tuned guitars, rubbery grooves and mechanical instrumental tones. It's a style that exploded in the early 2010s, largely thanks to Periphery themselves, but the word "djent" itself is a label that Periphery have pushed back against over the years, so it's hysterical that they'd go right out and pluck the title of their new record from one of the most common metal message board refrains of the 2010s.

So, what about that album title? Well, considering that Periphery are often considered one of the leaders of djent music, it's certainly an interesting statement to be making. To the band's credit, Djent is actually considered a "subgenre" of progressive metal rather than a genre, per Wikipedia.

While they've had no trouble building a loyal, ever growing fan base over the course of a career that's nearly twenty years old, this Washington D.C. band has often had trouble overcoming a sense of scepticism from the public, spearheaded by specialist publications. Often labelled as \u201cDjent\u201d (a name originally coined to describe music composed by Meshuggah, masters of the genre), Periphery has also faced criticism that the melodic approach of its singer Spencer Sotelo tended to lean too far to the soppy side of the genre, as do many so-called metalcore bands. However, the band\u2019s motto is proclaimed loud and clear on its album V: Djent Is Not A Genre. In short, it fights back against labels and their conventions. The fight is embodied in this very dense record, sometimes impenetrably so, but which inarguably takes it beyond many stylistic boundaries. It does this at the risk of getting muddled up, trying to force entire universes, somewhat heavy-handedly, to cohabit within the same track. It's as daring as it is loaded.Meticulously composed over the course of the first lockdown in 2020, this album is above all a progressive metal album that borrows as much from djent (very prominent in \u201cZagreus\u201d\u2019s tremendous kickoff) as it does from the eighties electronic sound of Silhouette. Although both the choruses and the slower songs are flooded with vocal melodies, as soon as Periphery launches into solid riffs, their sheer violence and power expand beyond anything we very rarely see, screams included. For a genre that begins at the limits, this is only possible with a fair amount of ingenuity. A work highlighted by a production fronted by a wall of guitars (Periphery has three guitarists), to be faced in full on the 12 minute track \u201cDracul Gras\u201d. Ambitious, powerful, complex, Periphery V is both a cross-cutting journey back to the best moments of the band's career and a record that pushes the limits a little further with each song. Periphery continues to move forward as a truly unstoppable force. \u00a9 Chief Brody\/Qobuz","sku":"j6054bpqwqvnb","releaseDate":"2023-03-10","brand":{"@type":"Brand","name":"Periphery"},"offers":{"@type":"Offer","url":"https:\/\/www.qobuz.com\/fr-fr\/album\/periphery-v-djent-is-not-a-genre-periphery\/j6054bpqwqvnb","priceCurrency":"AUD","price":19.42,"itemCondition":"https:\/\/schema.org\/NewCondition","availability":"https:\/\/schema.org\/OnlineOnly","seller":{"@type":"Organization","name":"Qobuz"}}} {"@context":"http:\/\/schema.googleapis.com\/","@type":"MusicAlbum","@id":"https:\/\/www.qobuz.com\/fr-fr\/album\/periphery-v-djent-is-not-a-genre-periphery\/j6054bpqwqvnb","url":"https:\/\/www.qobuz.com\/fr-fr\/album\/periphery-v-djent-is-not-a-genre-periphery\/j6054bpqwqvnb","name":"Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre","description":"Listen Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre by Periphery on the Qobuz Webplayer","datePublished":"2023-03-10","potentialAction":{"@type":"ListenAction","target":[{"@type":"EntryPoint","urlTemplate":"https:\/\/www.qobuz.com\/fr-fr\/album\/periphery-v-djent-is-not-a-genre-periphery\/j6054bpqwqvnb?autoplay=true","actionPlatform":["http:\/\/schema.org\/DesktopWebPlatform","http:\/\/schema.org\/IOSPlatform","http:\/\/schema.org\/AndroidPlatform","http:\/\/schema.googleapis.com\/GoogleAudioCast","http:\/\/schema.googleapis.com\/GoogleVideoCast"]}],"expectsAcceptanceOf":{"@type":"Offer","category":"free","eligibleRegion":[]}}} (function(w,d,s,l,i){w[l]=w[l]||[];w[l].push({'gtm.start':new Date().getTime(),event:'gtm.js'}); var f=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],j=d.createElement(s),dl=l!='dataLayer'?'&l='+l:'';j.async=true; j.src='//www.googletagmanager.com/gtm.js?id='+i+dl; f.parentNode.insertBefore(j,f);})(window,document,'script','dataLayer','GTM-MTLV8X8'); 006ab0faaa
