Students will be able to find the percentage of a given number. By mastering this skill they will be able to express the required percentage as a fraction and then use a written or mental strategy to solve the subsequent multiplication.
(1) Worksheets (LIT)
Students will be provided with two examples of questioning which will ask them to calculate the percentage of a quantity. These include questions only asking for them to find the percentage of a number, and longer worded questions with a scenario. These resources could be used after a class discussion or a description of a certain topic so students will have a chance to exercise their newfound knowledge and develop their skills.
(2) Percentages Memory Game (ICT)
A calculator or working paper will be required. This game will allow students to apply their knowledge of percentages by also forcing students to exercise their memorisation abilities. This activity could be applied during the middle of the class; perhaps after they have attempted a worksheet.
(3) Additional Game for Calculating the Percentages of Quantities (ICT)
Another game that the students could attempt in pairs or individually. This game could be introduced to the students towards the end of the lesson as a reflection of what they have learnt.
Lesson Description
9:00am Introduction:
The teacher will reflect on what has been learnt so far. In doing so the teacher will have students leading this discussion. Hence the students will reflect on their own knowledge on what has been learnt so far and it will be more beneficial for them. After this reflection the teacher will introduce how we can use percentages to find the percentage of a given number. The teacher will ask questions such as, "in what situations in real life might we find the percentage of a quantity?" The teacher will then perform an example on the board using the names of one of the students in the class.
9:15am Worksheet:
The students will work in pairs to complete a percentage change worksheet. The teacher will raise questions such as, "how might we model these questions? Think about what we were just talking about. Imagine that we are trying to calculate a discount from an original price." The students will work in pairs here so that they can learn from each other and see different strategies.
9:35am Calculating Percentages of Quantities Memory Game:
To break up the lesson the students will then play the Percentage of Quantities game on the computer. This different perspective will benefit the students as it would provide them with an alternative viewpoint into calculating percentages of quantities. Additionally this game will also make students think a bit differently, as some memorization is required. Hence it would be a refreshing activity.
9:50am Conclusion:
The teacher will reflect on what has been learnt in the class. The teacher will pose statements to the class such as, "remind me why it is important to know how to calculate percentages of quantities." The teacher will also give out some homework. The homework will be valuable evidence to assess how students are going.
