Students will be provided with examinations into how percentages are widely used throughout society. Through these insights students will gain an understanding as to why it is important to learn about percentages. Furthermore, through these examples of real life applications students will become more invested in the concepts surrounding percentages as a result of them observing how the topic is not only relevant to them now, but it will be part of their everyday lives in the future as well.
(1) Web pages displaying examples of percentages in everyday life. (ICT)
These examples could be used by the teacher during a discussion. In addition the teacher could display these images to the students after creating a group discussion by asking students to brainstorm what possible applications of percentages they could think of.

(2) Worked Example of Percentages in Real Life (LIT)
This question can be used as an example for a teacher to display on the board to support their explanations.
(3) Prezi displaying the use of percentages in everyday life (ICT)
This Prezi could be displayed by the teacher on the board.
(4) Student Presentations (ICT)
Students will make their own small presentations in groups on where percentages are used in everyday life. This activity will provide students with an opportunity to learn on their own accord.
Lesson Description
9:00am Orientation:
The teacher will begin by asking students to remind them what they discovered and learnt from last lesson. The teacher will write some revision questions on the board. These could be questions similar to, "how can 75% be represented as a fraction and a decimal?" The aim of this revision activity would be to ensure that students reflect on what they have learnt so far.
9:10am Introduction:
The teacher will begin the lesson by explaining how percentages play an integral part in society. The teacher will pose questions to the students such as, "from what you have learnt so far, can you name any examples of how percentages are widely used throughout society?" Through this class discussion students will gain an understanding as to why it is important to learn about percentages.
9:20am Prezi:
The teacher will display the Prezi presentation which provides examinations into the relevance of percentages.
9:25am Student Presentations:
Students will construct their own short presentations in groups on their own ideas about how they think percentages are relevant to the real world. These presentations can be formulated on Microsoft PowerPoint and they only need to be short. The teacher will guide students throughout the activity and ask students if they need any help with making the PowerPoint. The groups will then take turns presenting their findings to the rest of the class. This use of Scaffolding by the teacher and giving students additional responsibility in their work will benefit them as they will feel more invested in the work if they have researched it themselves.
9:55am Conclusion:
The teacher will reflect on the findings in the lesson. Questions will be raised such as, "I hope you can all see now why percentages are an important mathematical concept to understand."
