Manet & Morisot. This blockbuster exhibit will be at the Palace of Legion of Honor, 100 34th, San Francisco, Oct. 11 , 2025 - March 1, 2026. Timed tickets are required. This is the first major exhibition dedicated to the artistic exchange between French Impressionists Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). • • Cunning Folk: Witchcraft, Magic and Occult Knowledge, highlighted as one of KQED’s "10 Shows to See This Fall," considers magical practices, practitioners and their persecution in early modern European artwork and material culture, C. 1500 - 1750. 

  • Edmonia Lewis: Indelible Impressions is a single gallery exhibit, recommended by the New York Times roundup of exhibits to see this Fall. It features 3 marble sculptures, displayed in a museum for the first time in 3 decades.  

Fortuna and the Immorality Garden (Machine), a Respite for the Weary Time Traveler, Kara Walker has long been recognized for her incisive examinations of the dynamics of power and the exploitation of race and sexuality. Her work leverages expressions of fantasy and humor to confront troubling histories and dominant narratives, repossessing control in the process. Inspired by a wide range of sources, from antique dolls to Octavia Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower, Walker’s new commission, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), considers the memorialization of trauma, the objectives of technology, and the possibilities of transforming the negative energies that plague contemporary society. Here, automatons trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle are repositories of the human soul. They recall mechanized medieval icons that evidenced divinity, vitality, and the promise of faith. Situated within an energetically charged field of black obsidian from Mt. Konocti in Lake County — a volcanic glass with deep spiritual properties — Walker’s Gardeners evoke wonder, reflection, respite, and hope. Just past this prophetic vignette, the installation’s namesake, Fortuna, responds to each visitor with a choreographed gesture and a printed fortune fresh from her mouth — an offering of absolution and contemplation."  July 1 2024 - Spring 2026.  SFMOMA, 151Third St., San Francisco. Anderson Collection at Stanford University, 314 Lomita Dr., Stanford. https://anderson.stanford.edu/  The permanent collection, on the second floor of the museum, re-opened on Sept. 22, with the Collection's 10th anniversary celebration.  This exhibit puts a high-quality, wide-ranging collection of modern art in the context of the Anderson's home, where the collection was displayed before moving to Stanford. Faces of Ruth Asawa. The Cantor acquired Untitled (LC.012, Wall of Masks) in 2020. These 233 masks, which originally hung on the exterior of Ruth Asawa’s family home in Noe Valley, have never been shown in their entirety outside their original context. After two years of conservation treatment and careful planning, they were mounted as part of the long-term installation. On-going. The Cantor Arts Center,  328 Lomita Dr., Stanford University.
