On September 25, 2025, the debuting AnSci Robotics team marked its first triumph after nabbing wins in various events in the Robotics Demo Fest, held at the 21st Century Learning Environment Model (CLEM) in Antipolo City National Science and Technology High School as part of the Division Science and Technology Fair (DSTF).
The Initial Struggle
AnSci's SumoBot team that was composed by Nigel Abriol, Alex Siddayao, and Karl Espinas, faced many challenges even before the competition started, as Nigel Abriol, one of the participants, stated, “I really don't want to complain, but we weren't given that much time to train, specifically for sumobot.”
The team’s coach, Louis Angelo Dorosan, also conveyed some of the challenges that the team faced during the preparation stage, as he put it, “Actually, kulang talaga sa time… Kaya wala tayong nasali na junior high… So, time-wise. Kulang na kulang.
However, the team’s struggle was not limited to the preparation stage. Nigel further added, “During the event, we faced several problems. We had to cram our sumobot's code; since we weren't able to complete our software yesterday”.
Defying Expectations
Faced with a rocky start and fierce competition. The team was not optimistic about their chances of taking home the victory, as their coach said, “Expectation-wise, alanganin kasi meron tayong mga kalaban na national level na eh. So, expectation wise hindi naman tayo nagset ng mataas na bar.”
Furthermore, Nigel Abriol expressed his worries, “I was expecting na makaka-last place kami since a day before lang naform ung team natin, and I have little to no experience when it comes to robotics.”
In spite of the team’s lack of confidence, the results of the competition completely overturned their expectations. In the Sumobot Senior High School Category, the Ansci Robotics won first place, defeating teams from Mayamot National High School who reached the National Stage in the past, but in the said event they only snagged second place, while Antipolo City Senior High School placed third.
Meanwhile, in the Line Tracing Category for Senior High School. The team took home fourth place. Competing fiercely with teams from Antipolo City Senior High School which topped the event, while San Jose National High School, clinched the second place.
The Division Science and Technology Fair (DSTF) is held in the month of September in parallel with the celebration of Science Month. This is in alignment with the Presidential Proclamation No. 264, s. 2002.
In contrast to the team’s challenging start, the result of the competition could not be more triumphant. From the lack of preparation time to the challenges during the competition. The sheer determination and perseverance of the AnSci robotics team won them their place as the champions of the Division Science and Technology Fair (DSTF) Sumobot competition.
