John Robinson / Christopher Swyers of Barley had a 'whether'  (a castrated sheep/goat), stolen  from his land.

Trial

Mutton was cooked for the famous meal on Good Friday at Malkin Tower. Elizabeth Device (old Demdike) claimed in 1612 that her spirit, Ball, told her to make a  clay model of John Robinson alias Swyer of Barley. She dried it so that it crumbled and he died a week later. She did this because he had insulted her by saying that she had an illegitimate child.

Commemorative Wood There is now a new sculpture trail, with plaques relating to  many of the 'witches'.  If you have a spare hour or two and want a good walk, you will enjoy this Sculpture Trail

If you wonder where the name 'Barley' came from, there are two theories.  Some consider it comes from older times when 'Boar Lea' meant a clearing with Boars. Whereas later version is from when the villages were enclosed and took the name 'Barley with Wheatley', which pretty much gives the game away that barley was grown here, while wheat was grown just over the hill.
