Pen and Sword Club

The Pen & Sword Club was established nearly 30 years ago by the Pool of TA Public Information Officers to provide a link between serving and retired officers and supporters within the British Ministry of Defence.

Today it has grown into an internationally recognised all-arms and defence communications organisation with a professional membership that includes Regular and Reservist members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, the Army, the Royal Air Force and civilian practitioners within the British Ministry of Defence.

The club’s membership, which is by invitation, also includes crisis communications, media and information operations specialists in NATO and friendly countries plus senior politicians, civil servants, journalists, academics, authors and successful businessmen and women in the defence communications industry.

The club’s aims are:

  • The promotion of Military Media Operations as a primary, necessary and valued Information Operations skill in the 21st century.

  • To encourage dialogue between the media and the defence communications professions

  • To organise events facilitating understanding and exchange between the professions

  • To collate and disseminate, via social media and publications, information, analyses, and research into past, current and future practices to enhance the development of media operations in the world of defence.

Club members have applied their skills on military deployments around the world including Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Gulf Wars, the Balkans, Borneo and with Multinational Forces in Lebanon and the Sinai.

The club has an active national centre operating in London. There is a flourishing social section and a monthly dining club. The club also manages a 400 plus LinkedIn membership.

The club’s newsletter, Scribblings, is a popular read among members and friends of the club. It promotes networking and provides updates on people and current themes within media operations.
