The Pemberville 150th Anniversary Hometown Heroes Program is a heartfelt initiative that honors military service members and first responders, both past and present. This project is a way of celebrating the 150th anniversary of Pemberville and the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Here are the key details:
· Purpose: The program celebrates the bravery and dedication of individuals who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and first responders. It aims to foster community pride and recognition for these heroes.
· Signs: Participants are featured on 18 x 24-inch sign that display their name, military branch, photo, and other optional details like service era and honors. For first responders it displays their name, rank, title, organization, and years of service. These signs will be displayed at the Pemberville Veterans Park located by Memorial Drive starting May 24th through May 31st. On Memorial Day, the American Legion Post 183 will call out all the names of the honorees at their service, creating a visible tribute.
· Eligibility: To qualify, the honoree must be an active-duty service person, a veteran with an honorable discharge, have served in the reserves or National Guard, or be a past or current first responder. The honoree does not need to be from the Pemberville and surrounding community.
· Application Requirements: sign information, including the spelling of honoree’s name will be taken directly from the application. Please make sure all information on the application is correct. The Pemberville 150th committee is not responsible for any misspellings that were submitted with the application. By submitting an application, the applicant agrees that he or she has permission to use the service member’s likeness and name on the sign.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND REVIEW PROCESS
Different ways to complete the application:
SUBMIT APPLICATION AHEAD OF TIME – You may pick up an application packet with a return envelope at the Pemberville Library or the Pemberville Legion Hall (by the office). Complete the application and then send it in the envelope to Pemberville 150th/America 250th Anniversary, PO Box 207, Pemberville, OH 43450. We will then put information into our computer and we will contact you in February or early March to make an appointment for you to bring the photo to a meeting at the library and we will scan the photo and show you a completed sign for your approval.
IN PERSON – There will be opportunities in late February or early March to meet with representatives from the Pemberville 150th Committee who will help you complete the application, scan the military photo you bring with you, and take your check for your portion of the sign. Completed applications will be accepted from October 6, 2025 to April 3, 2026. The committee will receive and review applications for completeness during the application period. Upon a determination that the application is incomplete, the applicant will be notified and asked to submit the missing information.
In late February or early March - Applicants must provide a high-resolution military photograph (digital file or photograph) of the service member dressed in military uniform or from the time in military service. If none is available look for a possible picture from around that time. We will work with you if you can’t find a photo. Photos for first responders can be current photos. Photo should be portrait orientation if possible. They need to be at least 300 to 600 DPI so that is why we are scanning them for you.
Signs will cost $25.00 to the applicant which includes design, printing, and displaying of the sign. We will also have a flower and the American Flag for each sign display. Assistance is available with this cost if needed (see application). The Pemberville 125th committee will sponsor and waive the sign fee for any nomination that is submitted on behalf of local military personnel that were killed in action, missing in action or was a POW. Applicants will be notified via email regarding pick-up times and locations of the signs after May 31, 2026.
This program not only honors individual service members but also strengthens the community's connection to its history and values.
