Dr. Fan becomes the Co-Editor-in-Chief for Landscape and Urban Planning, the flagship journal in the field of urban planning, from March 1, 2024.

Dr. Fan has been listed in World's Top 2% Scientists for both career impact (1960-2023) and impact in Year 2022 (the most updated year) by John P.A.Ioannidis at Stanford University and Elsevier, published on Oct. 4, 2023.
Dr. Fan was elected as the president for the term of 2023-27 of International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) in June 2023.
MSU William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty (2022-23)
Dr. Fan was awarded as MSU William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty for the academic year of 2022-23. William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Awards are made each year to members of the faculty for outstanding total service to the University. Final selection of William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award winners is made by an All-University Awards Committee appointed by the President. No more than ten William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Awards are made each year.

MSU researchers to lead $1.7M NASA grant to study urban-rural resiliency in Southeast Asia
In a new $1.7M grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a group of researchers led by Dr. Peilei Fan from the Center for Global Change and Earth Observations (CGCEO) at Michigan State University will work to improve landscape sustainability and resilience in response to climate extremes and other challenges in Southeast Asia.
