ELA: Students will learn about what schools are and their importance using a variety of fiction and nonfiction text. They will ask and answer questions about the story using detail and pictures from the text. They will also study real schools from around the world and learn about the difficulties that children face while trying to get an education.
Writing (Informational): Students will learn how to create an informational piece were they will be comparing and contrasting Herbert Akins to a school they learned about from around the world. They will learn how to write an introduction, topic sentence with details, and a conclusion. Students will also learn how to revise and edit their writing so they can publish thier first book!

One of the schools that children learn about is in Port-Au- Prince, Haiti. The program calls it the “Tent School “. Through the help of organizations students are provided a “School in a Box” to give them at least a basic education while their country deals with war and natural disasters. Students will spend an entire day using nothing to learn, but the materials in this box. The inside of the lid will be painted with chalkboard paint for us to use as a display board to teach the children.
