The Historic Pee Dee Union Baptist Church
Since its founding in 1867, Pee Dee Union Baptist Church has been guided by faithful leaders who have answered God’s call in various seasons of history, each leaving a lasting imprint on the congregation and the Cheraw community.
The church’s journey began under the visionary leadership of Rev. Wisdom London (1867–1915), the founding pastor. Rev. London preached the first sermon from an outdoor platform and guided the newly organized congregation through its earliest years, laying a spiritual foundation rooted in freedom, faith, and perseverance during the Reconstruction era.
Following him, Rev. Claudius McCall, then Rev. F. W. Prince (1915–1940) led the church through a period of growth and stability, including the rebuilding of the sanctuary after the devastating 1912 tornado. His long tenure strengthened the church’s identity and presence in the community.
The mid-20th century brought a series of devoted leaders who continued to nurture the congregation, including Rev. J. N. Carr (1942–1950), Rev. O. St. Clair Franklin (1951–1952), Rev. Woodard, Rev. Alfred McPhail, and Rev. Isaiah Williams, each serving faithfully during times of transition and renewal. It was during the pastorate of Rev. Isaiah Williams that the present brick sanctuary was constructed, symbolizing resilience and hope.
From 1974 to 1999, Rev. Thomas Dawkins provided more than two decades of steady leadership, guiding multiple generations and reinforcing the church’s role as a spiritual anchor in Cheraw.
Entering the new millennium, Rev. Dr. Jerry Corbett (2000–2015) led the church with a focus on continued growth and spiritual development, followed by Rev. U. L. Sharper (2015–2017), who served during a brief but important season of transition. Rev. Dr. Sam Wack Jr. also contributed to the ongoing ministry and leadership of the church.
Today, Pee Dee Union Baptist Church is led by Rev. Dr. Samuel Richardson III, whose pastoral ministry continues the legacy of faith, teaching, counseling, and compassionate service. Under his leadership, the church remains committed to preaching the Gospel, supporting families, caring for those in need, and honoring the rich heritage entrusted to it.
Pee Dee Union Baptist Church has remained a testament to enduring faith—built by generations, guided by devoted shepherds, and sustained by God’s grace.
